The Cobham enterprise was started in 1934 by Sir Alan Cobham, an innovative aviation pioneer by forming Flight Refueling Ltd to develop air refueling techniques and equipment. In 1939, the first Transatlantic trial was conducted with Imperial Airways “C" class flying boats and Flight Refueling Ltd’s Harrow tankers. From 1944 to 1945, air refueling equipment provided for 1000 RAF Lancaster / Lincoln tankers were received for use in the Far East and from 1946 to 1948, civil trials of air refueling were performed over the English Channel and the South and North Atlantic. 1948 to 1949, Flight Refueling was engaged on the Berlin Airlift. During 1949, the first trials of Flight Refueling’s probe and drogue air refueling equipment lead to later usage by British and American Services.
