2 SARSAT RESCUES
On July 1 the COSPAS-SARSAT system detected a 406 MHz distress signal in Florala, Alabama.  A Cobham Avionics - Artex Products C406-N ELT activated as a result of the crash of a U.S. Airforce Bell TH-1 helicopter.  Air Force Rescue Coordination Center notified Army personnel at Ft Rucker, Alabama about the Sarsat alert.  Ft Rucker personnel went to the Sarsat location and they picked up two survivors.  The two persons on the helicopter were transported to the Southeast Alabama Medical Center with minor injuries.  Two SARSAT Rescues.

Service Notice SN020 for C406-1, C406-1 HM, C406-2, C406-2-HM, B406-4 and G406-4 programmed with certain location protocols and connected to an ELT to NAV Interface

Artex Aircraft Supplies, Inc. issued Service Notice No. SN020 to inform owners of ;C406-1, C406-1 HM, C406-2, C406-2 HM, B406-4 and G406-4 programmed with National and Standard Location Protocol and connected to an ELT to NAV Interface that a software deficiency detected in the programming protocol could, under specific circumstances, affect the accuracy of the position transmitted.

Artex has been working with Cospas/Sarsat on resolving the problem and a software update has been approved by the FAA and Cospas/Sarsat.

ELT models programmed with a different protocol and not connected to an ELT to NAV Interface are not affected.

In case of ELT activation during an emergency, the Cospas/Sarsat satellites as well as the Search and Rescue infrastructure will receive the 406 MHz signal and overcome the reduced location accuracy transmission through Doppler and DF and the life saving capability of the 406 MHz technology is not compromised.

Owners of affected ELTs will receive a letter through our OEM and distributor network communicating the software update requirement with instructions on how to administer the retrofit of their ELTs during the next annual maintenance procedures.
