Artex Aircraft Supplies, Inc., issued Service Bulletin No. 20 to inform owners of C406-1, C406-1 HM, C406-2, C406-2 HM, B406-4 and G406-4 Emergency Locator Transmitters that a software deficiency detected in the “National Location Protocol” and the “Standard Location Protocol” could under specific circumstances affect the accuracy of the position transmitted.

Artex has been working with Cospas/Sarsat on resolving the problem and a software update has been approved by the FAA and Cospas/Sarsat.

The following ELT models are affected:

  • C406-1
  • C406-1 HM
  • C406-2
  • C406-2 HM
  • B406-4
  • G406-4

if connected to an ELT to NAV Interface and

if programmed with “Standard Location Protocol” or “National Location Protocol”

ELT models programmed with a different protocol or not connected to an ELT to NAV Interface are not affected.

In case of ELT activation during an emergency, the Cospas/Sarsat satellites as well as the Search and Rescue infrastructure will overcome the reduced location accuracy transmission through Doppler and DF thus the life saving capability of the 406 MHz technology is not compromised.
