Helicopter

Emergency Locators for helicopter applications have to compensate for the fact that helicopter rarely crash head-first. ELTs for fixed wing application need just one single directional “G-Switch mounted lined up with the direction of flight. ELTs for helicopter application contain multi-directional “G-Switches which will enable the ELT to activate regardless of how the helicopter impacts.

Many ELTs with a single-directional “G-Switchâ€? are mounted at a 45 degree angle which pre-loads the “G-Switchâ€? that could inadvertently activate the ELT when pulling high-g turns or during hard landings. The Cobham Avionics - Artex Products helicopter models can be mounted on a horizontal plane due to its custom design.

The Artex C406-1 HM and C406-2 HM series ELTs may be interfaced with a separate, optional Artex ELT to NAV Interface while the C406-N HM series ELTs have an integrated ELT to NAV Interface. All systems with NAV capability enable sending of latitude / longitude position of the aircraft as part of the digital message transmission reducing the search area to less than 100 meters. The latest developments for helicopter applications include the ME406 HM, the multi-directional "G-Switch" version of the popular General Aviation ELT ME406 and the ME406/P, an automatic, portable version of the ME406 HM used with an auxillary portable antenna allowing transmission of the distress signal outside of the aircraft.
